Assignment #3 by Lise Lee Framstad

Robotic lawn mower
By: Lise Lee Framstad

The robotic lawn mower is a lawn mower, which runs by itself, which means you can basically do whatever you want while it does the lawn for you. Special wires keep it from running away from the specific zone you have chosen, and by using the timer; you can even go on holiday and come home to a perfectly done lawn. In parks and recreational areas, the gardener saves lots of time and energy doing other stuffs, while the lawn mower work its way all over the green areas. Just simply put wires around the places you do not want it to cut (e.g flowers and trees) and it will go around. It charges itself in a special charging station/house and if anyone will try to lift it up or steal it without using a given code, an alarm goes off and you will be alerted on your cellphone. Although there are many developers, such as Lawnbotts, Robomow and BelRobotics, I will base the information given in this text on the models from Husqvarna.

The robotic lawn mower is perfect for hospitals, retirement homes, universities, offices, hotels etc. with green areas. It can either replace a gardener or replace the work of doing the lawn for the gardener, so he or she may focus on other parts of the job, such as flowers, cutting hedges etc.  As we all know, doing the lawn manually is a heavy job and takes a lot of energy; the robotic lawn mower will not only be a energy-saver, but also a time-saver, as the gardener can spend time doing other things while he robotic lawn mower do the lawn.  While humans get tired, and probably won’t have time or energy for doing larger green areas, the robotic mower never get tired, and when it needs to charge its batteries, it will find its way to the docking station. Also, while “normal” lawnmowers tend to be noisy, the robotic lawn mower runs very silent, an advantage which will be appreciated by everyone. The robotic lawn mower is rather cheap in use (around 10 to 50 euros per season, according to Husqvarna) and will pay off compared to paying salary to a gardener. Another advantage, especially in countries with high temperature, the robotic lawn mower works perfectly in temperatures up to 113 Fahrenheit, and does not need any breaks away from the heat.  With low costs and many advantages, the robotic lawn mower is absolutely a strong competitor to the human gardener.
